Frequently Asked Questions

How does the PSL points system work?+
In the Pakistan Super League, teams earn 2 points for a win and 0 points for a loss. If a match ends in a no result (abandoned due to rain or other reasons), each team receives 1 point. There are no bonus points for batting or bowling performance. Teams are ranked first by total points, then by Net Run Rate (NRR) as a tiebreaker.
What is Net Run Rate (NRR) in PSL?+
Net Run Rate is a statistical method used to rank teams that are level on points. It is calculated by subtracting the average runs scored against a team per over from the average runs scored by that team per over across all matches. A positive NRR means a team scores faster than its opponents on average, while a negative NRR indicates the opposite. NRR becomes crucial in tight group stage races where multiple teams finish on the same number of points.
How many teams qualify for PSL playoffs?+
The top 4 teams in the points table at the end of the group stage qualify for the PSL playoffs. The teams finishing 1st and 2nd earn a significant advantage: they play in Qualifier 1, where the winner goes straight to the Final, and the loser gets a second chance. Teams finishing 3rd and 4th must win through the Eliminators with no margin for error.
What happens if PSL teams are tied on points?+
If two or more teams finish the group stage on equal points, Net Run Rate (NRR) is used as the primary tiebreaker. If teams are still tied after NRR, the head-to-head record between the tied teams is considered. If the tie remains unbroken, the team with more wins is ranked higher. In extremely rare cases where all these criteria are equal, the team that finished higher in the previous season's standings may be given preference.
How are PSL playoffs structured?+
The PSL uses a page playoff system similar to other major T20 leagues. Qualifier 1 is played between the 1st and 2nd placed teams — the winner advances directly to the Final. The Eliminator is played between the 3rd and 4th placed teams — the loser is eliminated from the tournament. Qualifier 2 is then played between the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator — the winner of this match earns the second spot in the Final. This structure rewards consistency during the group stage.
